Philosophy reading lists often begin with Plato, continue through Aristotle, Descartes, Hume, and Kant, and then work their way through the history of philosophy toward the present. This makes sense if the main purpose is to study the history of philosophy. I do not think it is the best way to learn how to think philosophically.

What Is Philosophy

What Is Philosophy?

If you want to know what philosophy is, you might consult Wikipedia. What you find there is rather dispiriting. No clear definition, but a succession of traditions, epochs, schools. There is Western philosophy, Eastern philosophy, African philosophy, feminist philosophy, analytic and continental philosophy. The message between the lines: philosophy is whatever calls itself philosophy. Each tradition defines for itself what it means by the term.

What Is Quality

What Is Quality?

The other day I found myself standing in a B&Q, staring at a shelf of screwdrivers. Twenty-three different models, prices ranging from £2.49 to £38. I picked up the cheapest one, then the most expensive, and within approximately three seconds I knew: the expensive one was better. The handle sat differently in my hand, the metal had a different weight, the finish where handle met shaft was—well, what exactly?

Minimum Standards for Productive Philosophical Discussion

Introduction

Philosophical discussion differs fundamentally from mere exchange of opinions, ideology, or worldview marketing. It aims at truth-aptness and knowledge acquisition. Where certain minimum standards are absent, what emerges is not philosophy but wishful thinking, rhetoric, or power play.

The following text formulates basic conditions under which philosophical discussion can meaningfully take place at all. These conditions are not substantive dogmas but methodological prerequisites for all texts and discussions on this website.
